Émile Joseph Carlier trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 — one of the most celebrated French sculptors of his generation. These two bronze bookends, a young satyr and a billy-goat, are signed "Carlier" and are characteristic of the mythological and animal subjects he returned to throughout his career. At around 5 kg combined, they have a satisfying weight and presence that speaks to the quality of the casting. A rare pair to find together in this condition.
