Mikko Puttonen’s Guide for Best Second Hand Interiors Stores in Helsinki - Vogue Scandinavia
In Vogue Scandinavia’s newest interiors series, they explore the must-visit vintage and secondhand furniture stores across all of Scandinavia’s capital cities. Here, Finnish photographer and content creator Mikko Puttonen – known not only for his flair for fashion but also for his sleek interiors – shares his favourite spots in Helsinki for uncovering both pre-loved design icons and one-of-a-kind gems. Recently Mikko visited our galleria with some questions and beautiful photography which can be discovered below.
Though it may be more snug than its Nordic neighbours, Helsinki is a true treasure trove for vintage and secondhand interiors lovers. After all, Finland is steeped in design history, with a throng of Scandinavia’s greats – such as Alvar Aalto, Paavo Tynell and Maija Isola – hailing from the country.
While many of the city’s buzzy vintage and secondhand furniture stores stock coveted Nordic design classics, a new wave of shops catering to alternative aesthetics has emerged in recent years. And there are no signs of slowing down as vintage and secondhand culture – long nurtured in our region – continues to thrive.
Among Helsinki’s newer vintage destinations, Gitte Interiors offers a carefully curated selection of antiques, ranging from the 1800s to more contemporary pieces. Founder Julian Hyvönen has a soft spot for the ornate detailing of the Victorian era, which he often pairs with clean, Bauhaus-inspired forms. Sourced from across Europe, the shop includes hard-to-find treasures like the 1970s DS-600 Snake Modular Sofa’ by De Sede.
The itself store feels like a gallery: raw concrete floors, light-toned walls, and subtle styling with dried florals allow each piece to seize the spotlight. Though collector’s items are priced accordingly, there are also more affordable pieces in the mix. The shop is nestled in Punavuori, right next to Hietalahti Market Hall, which is a great spot to grab lunch or a coffee after browsing.
