Interior Design and Colours

Colours are symbolically important and in interiors they affect the general atmosphere greatly.

Here are some ways in which different colours can be understood and used in interior design.

Blue is a calming yet strong colour. Symbolically it can refer to sky and thus heaven, giving it a strong liturgical meaning. Especially light and bright blue can be understood to have biblical connotations. On the other hand, blue is also traditionally the colour of royalty, hence Royal Blue, giving the colour a graceful and sophisticated tendencies. Blue can easily be used to support variety of interior design decisions.

Green is a natural and refreshing colour that is often associated with growth and renewal. Green is the colour of new life. Light shades of green, such as mint green or pale green, can add a fresh and airy feel to a space, while deeper shades of green, such as forest green, can be used to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Yellow is a cheerful and optimistic colour that symbolises light itself, thus it can be associated with presence of God. Light shades of yellow, such as lemon yellow or pale yellow, are great for creating a sunny and welcoming atmosphere, while deeper shades of yellow, such as golden yellow, can add warmth and depth to a space.

Red is the colour of fire and therefore a bold and energetic. Red can add drama and impact to a space, best exemplified by French Baroque interiors. Light shades of red, such as coral or blush are warmer and gentler, while darker shades of red, such as maroon or burgundy, can create a rich and luxurious atmosphere.

Purple is a regal and sophisticated colour with important symbolic value. Traditionally purple symbolises penitence and can thus add a touch of elegance to a space. Light shades of purple, such as lavender or lilac, are great for creating a romantic atmosphere, while deeper shades of purple, such as plum or eggplant, can add a touch of richness and depth.

Neutral colours, such as white, grey, beige, and black, can be used to create a calming and relaxing atmosphere. Neutral colours are versatile and can be paired with a variety of other colours to create different moods and atmospheres, making them a popular choice in interior design.
